Lab audits deliver peace of mind and quality assurance

The BATT Lab can provide an independent audit of your lab’s performance and adherence to quality standards and measures including the procedures of AASHTO R 18 or company internal audits. It’s a good strategy to consider if your lab is seeking AASHTO accreditation or facing another upcoming assessment. Think of it as a check-up that can determine if your procedures or equipment are out of compliance.

An independent audit can also provide the confidence your customers seek in the quality of your pavement mixes.

As the lab operations manager at BATT Lab and my experience with managing our AASHTO accreditation, I have completed multiple lab audits, and I bring a strong background and knowledge of asphalt testing and analysis to the audit process.

Some of the more common problems I see in audits relate to the use of equipment. Daily or routine equipment checks, such as making sure the equipment is level or balanced, is a commonly overlooked procedure. Small and seemingly insignificant checks can add up and lead to faulty test results. Other problem areas include misuse of equipment. Using an incorrect thermometer for a required test or calibration is a good example.

A typical audit includes an in-depth review of the lab quality manual, plus equipment and personnel records. I observe testing procedures to confirm that your methods comply with AASHTO standards. Upon completion of the examinations, which average one to two days, you’ll receive an audit report with a summary of our findings and any recommendations for improvements.

An independent lab audit is a good investment in ensuring that the quality of your lab results ensures the quality of your asphalt mix and the quality of the pavement that the customer expects. It provides peace of mind to you and to your customers.
