New generation asphalt lab workers consider sustainability Priority One

An opportunity to join the BATT team in 2020 gave Callie Boggs an ideal way to build experience onto the knowledge she gained from a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry. She started out as a mix lab technician where she prepared and ran various tests from batching aggregate and mixing, to measuring volumetrics on HMA samples.

“After working in the mix lab for a year, I was offered the role of lead technician in the asphalt binder lab, which matched my interest in chemistry and rheology within the industry,” she said. “I’m approaching my second year working in the binder lab and have already gained a wealth of knowledge and experience.

“Asphalt chemistry is a crucial part of pavement design and is a driving force for innovation in the industry. There are always new challenges to investigate and new discoveries to share with our clients that help us to engineer top-tier products that make roadway designs more sustainable.”

In May, Callie will complete her master’s degree in public health with a concentration in environmental health science and sustainability.

“Environmental health and sustainability are major topics being discussed across the asphalt industry, and I am highly focused on providing services to our clients that ensure their products are achieving sustainability standards and ensuring we do all we can to advance the mission of the asphalt industry towards the goal of a more positive global impact.”

Callie is an up-and-coming asphalt technologist whom BATT relies on daily. With her high standards in the lab, she complements our commitment to excellence in testing and pavement innovation. As our lead employee in the areas of lab safety and sustainability, we are fortunate to have her, as well as other highly qualified members of the BATT team.
